Art exhibition
by Gavin Byrt and Marilyn Townsend
26 February 2010
At Five Sons Estate, we are featuring a new art exhibition by two local artists, which has already attracted much attention......
Marilyn Townsend
‘The art exhibition in the upper room February 27th to April 25th features Marilyn Townsend’s stunning depictions of underwater scenes.
Her work is admired by all, being unique in that the selection includes heavily textured acrylic painting on canvas with added stitched jellyfish, fishes, weedy and leafy seadragons to be found in Port Phillip and Westernport Bays. As well as texture she is particularly interested in light and shade and the way that the movement of the water influences them.
Marilyn has won many awards, written two books on machine embroidery and teaches mixed media at “Textile Artistry” Dromana.
For more details see her website www.marilyntownsend.com.au
Also included in the exhibition will be underwater photographs by Freddie Leong, and copies of his new book will be on sale.’
Gavin Byrt
Be captured by the light of a peninsula sunrise ... enjoy the sunset gold creating patterns through the branches of gums along a ridge ... stand knee deep in grasses that move in the sunlight...follow paths to the horizon.
Gavin’s passion for the Red Hill locality has inspired him to create an innovative and very individual view of our Australian landscape. The Red Hill influence is also evident in his impressions of local vineyards views.
One notable characteristic in Gavin’s paintings is the striking use of appealing colour. His images are very different from traditional landscape paintings, yet they are undeniably Australian. His paintings are modern with a sometimes stylised approach to form and colour. They are captivating in their ability to draw you, the viewer, into the picture and through the landscape.
Many of you will know Gavin through his pottery and ceramic creations, including his humorous “Giddy Bullfrogs”. Recently he has succumbed to the call of painting! His paintings now continue to reflect the artistic enjoyment and satisfaction that are very much part of his character.
Gavin’s other creative outputs include: writing and illustration, cartooning, teaching and music.
Gavin also welcomes visitors to his own studio and gallery. Most weekends Gavin and Chris will be found in their own Red Hill South gallery and tearoom – The Giddy Bullfrog Gallery – where Gavin’s other memorable creative outlet is as “scone maker extraordinaire”!
So join us at Five Sons Estate to view Gavin’s latest work. All paintings are for sale, and can be taken at purchase if required.
